Ok, so my son's birthday is coming up. I was thinking about getting a novelty cake from the local grocery story bakery. The conversation went something like this:

me: What are your sizes and prices?
employee: We have 1/4, 1/2, and full sheet. The prices are *gives prices*
me: Hmm, ok, how much does a quarter sheet feed
employee: We don't have a quarter sheet. We have 1/4 sheet, 1/2 sheet, and full sheet
me: *blinks at her* You don't have a quarter sheet, but you have a 1/4 sheet?
employee: *nods*
me: *decides not to pursue that line of thinking* Ok, so how many does the quar..I mean, the 1/4 sheet feed?
employee: 6-8 people
me: Hoe many does the 1/2 sheet feed?
employee: 30-35 people
me: *eyebrows draw together at the mathematics of that* Ok, so the quar..I mean the 1/4 sheet feeds 6-8 people, but the 1/2 sheet *thinks to self how that's just 1/4 sheet x 2* feeds 30-35 people?
employee: *nods*
me: *scratches head* ok, thanks for the info, I think I'll pass on it this time. *heads to the cake mix aisle and decides to do it myself since the baker can't do basic math and might f$#* up the ingredients*

I'm not sure how old he is, but do you think he would like a spaceship, dinosaur, or car cake. You can find the directions at the Pillsbury.com site. Martha Stewart has one for a monkey cake that is adorable.

Or, if you are planning a party, there are simple things to do for cupcakes. An even simpler thing to do is supply the cupcakes and decorating things and let the kids do it themselves.

He's a big fan of Thomas the Train, so I got some of that blue DIY icing in a can and made a ribbon around the top & bottom of the cake, then found a couple of Thomas candles to put on top along with some pre-made candy balloons & lettering (because I suck at trying to spell with the canned icing) and some colored sprinkles. It came out pretty good if I do say so myself *grin*

Sounds like you did really good -*pats back multiple times.*

Did you know that they sell bundt pans that mold out a castle or a carousel or so many things? I wish I had kiddies to bake for because these look so great. The pan wouldn't go to waste because you could do a different version every year as they grew up. I am in love with the castle myself. And I would love to see the kids decorate some of these things themselves.

It sounds like you had a great time.

Wow! I had no idea they had a castle and carousel one. Where did you find them? I've got a Christmas tree cake pan. Once, a few years ago when my friends were into throwing 'Pampered Chef' parties, I bought this large glass measuring cup. In the pamphlet, it shows that they baked a cake in the cup, then when it cooled and came out of the measuring cup upsid down, they stuck a Barbie doll in the middle and decorated it so that it looked like a ball dress (a la Sleeping Beauty/Cinderella). It was soooo pretty. That's what made me buy the dang cup. Of course, that was before I had a little boy LOL.

Check out the home of the original bundt pan - www.nordicware.com. You'll be amazed. There's a cathedral, a cottage, a stadium, and - they must have heard you asking - a train. The pan makes a number of cars (all different) that you join together to make the train. And that's only a few. I've hardly seen a tenth of them on shows.

*brain explodes from bad math*

It's a sad day indeed when a baker doesn't know that 1/4 is the same as a quarter. I'm sure doubling a recipe would be out of the question as well.

Happy b-day to your little guy! He'll always appreciate the cakes mom makes better anyway. ^__^

*laughs* Well, you never know, doubling the recipe might get us a whole brand new, never before available 1/3 sheet size. LOL

okay, now THAT was tooo funny. But knowing me, how i am, i would have been standing there doing the math and thinking that I was the one at fault of that my math was messed up cause that bakery, he's suppose to be the expert here, he's suppose to know what he's doing. so i would have been, hmmmm, these numbers are not adding up in my head the way he is saying them but he's the expert so i must be wrong. But just to let you know, you're not, that's just how i would have felt....LOL

LOL No worries. The baker had me so confused by the bad math for a minute, that I thought I was gonna have to whip out my calculator there in the store just to check the numbers. *grin*
