Brrrr....Frost and Near Misses, Oh My!
Dec. 4th, 2009 10:10 pmWell, wonder of wonders....it actually snowed today! Little white fluffy flakes twittering about in the sky. I live in the deep south. It's just...so rare! Of course, the ground's too hot to sustain it. It melted before actually landing. But still....SNOW!! And, as my mawmaw used to say, 'it's colder than a well-digger's left toenail' outside. *laughs*
Now, for the near misses. The other day, we were driving home and there were two dead dear and a friggin ELK on the side of the road. An ELK for goodness sake. Did I mention I live in the deep south? There's just no native Elk anywhere around. Maybe not even for several states around. So, we were naturally perplexed. And it was the size of a horse! We think it came from a private deer farm up the road. It was surreal though {would have really freaked us if it happened today, when there was snow outside ^^;}
But, within the last few days, what we have almost hit on our way home is all of the following:
1.) A deer - ok, that's actually not unusual despite the fact we live in a major city in a section surrounded by industry
2.) A beaver - now that was unusual. I'd never seen one outside a zoo, or the Animal Planet channel
But the most bizarre one was last night. We actually grazed it's flank:
3.) A wild pig and it's babies
The thing musta weighed 500lbs. If we'd hit it head on, we would have been in a world of hurt. That massive mound of walking pork was just meandering across the highway, with babies in toe (they were pretty big themselves) in the late hours of the evening, in the darkest part of the highway. I'm pretty sure I screamed when we almost slammed into the thing.
After we'd calmed down from that last near miss, the hubby actually joked that pork (known as the other white meat) might have been a nice change for the Christmas dinner. *shakes head at the crazy*
